Great reading lists can be in catalogs you get in the mail from curriculum suppliers... especially unit study or other literature based curricula. Just take the recommended reading or required reading books such as historical fiction or historical nonfiction books, science-y books and make alist of the ones you want your children to read. Many can be found at the library, but frankly, the really good stuff is Christian and your library will not have it.
For example, books by GA Henty, Bethlehem Books, Ballantyne Books, Landmark, Chuck Black, Castleberry Books, Grace & Truth books selections and such!
